Daejeon’s local transport is not difficult because of complicated Metro interchanges. The operating urban-rail service is Line 1, between Panam and Banseok. The decisions that matter are whether your destination is actually beside that line, whether your train journey crosses the 10-kilometre fare boundary, and how to complete any bus connection without losing the transfer benefit.
For a short visit, bring one compatible transport card per person and plan from the entrance of the place you are visiting, not from a broad neighbourhood label. Plan everyday travel after arriving in Daejeon separately from the intercity train or coach that brings you here.
Use Line 1 where it helps, not for every journey
Line 1 connects Daejeon Station, Jungangno, City Hall, Government Complex Daejeon and Yuseong Spa. If both ends of your trip are near its stations, there is no Metro line change to arrange. From Daejeon Station toward the Government Complex or Yuseong Spa, look for the Banseok direction; returning toward Daejeon Station from those areas means the Panam direction. Confirm the next station on the platform display before boarding.
| Starting situation | Useful transport decision | Check before leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving at Daejeon railway station | Follow local Metro signs for Line 1 rather than another intercity platform | The correct exit from the arrival concourse and your hotel address |
| Moving between Jungangno and the Dunsan area | Compare a direct Line 1 journey with the walk from City Hall or Government Complex | The building entrance, not just the district name |
| Staying around Yuseong Spa | Use Line 1 for places along the same corridor | Whether a bus or taxi is better for a destination away from the railway |
| Travelling between nearby old-centre addresses | Compare walking with going down to the platform | Weather, luggage and safe road crossings |
The operator’s Cyber Station provides station and route tools. Check the complete door-to-door journey rather than equating a rail ride with arrival at the destination. A campus, convention venue or museum can still require a substantial final leg.
Do not use a future network drawing as a map of services running today. Line 2 is a tram construction project, not an additional operating Metro option. The city’s tram notices also matter for surface travel: construction can alter the convenient approach to a road, stop or building. Follow current pedestrian signs rather than an old screenshot.
Understand the two fare sections before buying a token
Daejeon does not use a single flat Metro fare for every journey. Section 1 covers up to 10 kilometres from the departure station; Section 2 covers a longer journey. Select the actual destination in the ticketing or route tool rather than estimating the fare from a straight line on a street map. The operator’s fare table lists these amounts in Korean won.
| Passenger and ticket | Section 1 | Section 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Adult transport card | 1,550 | 1,650 |
| Adult single-journey token | 1,700 | 1,800 |
| Youth, 13–18, eligible card | 880 | 960 |
| Youth single-journey token | 1,700 | 1,800 |
| Child, 6–12, eligible card | 550 | 600 |
| Child discounted token | 600 | 650 |
The published adult category is ages 19–64. Older visitors should confirm concession eligibility and required identification with station staff, rather than treating age alone as a guarantee for an overseas tourist. For children and teenagers, make sure the card is configured for the correct age category before the first ride.
For an adult making four independent Section 1 trips, the card fares total KRW 6,200; four tokens total KRW 6,800. The KRW 600 difference excludes buying a new card and does not include a bus connection. A card already used elsewhere in Korea can therefore be more convenient than buying tokens repeatedly, while a one-off Metro ride may not justify purchasing a second card.
Separate card compatibility from recharge availability
The operator’s ticket and card guidance lists nationally compatible versions of Tmoney, Hanpay, Railplus, Cashbee and U-Pay among accepted prepaid cards. It also makes an important distinction: Metro-station prepaid recharge service is for the Tmoney family. A card can be accepted at the gate without being supported by the station’s recharge service.
If you already have Tmoney, check its balance before leaving the station area. If you use another compatible brand, locate a recharge outlet supporting that exact card before its balance gets low. Do not assume that an overseas contactless bank card is equivalent to a Korean transit card, or that a phone’s ordinary payment wallet is automatically configured for local transport.
- Choose your destination and fare category before paying. For a single journey, the operator lists token-shaped tickets, including a discounted child token.
- Check the machine’s accepted payment methods and displayed fare. Keep some won cash available rather than relying on a foreign bank card at every machine.
- Keep each traveller’s ticket separate. At the gate, follow the marked reader or token instructions and allow the gate to respond before moving.
- Keep the token throughout the ride and use the destination gate as instructed. A token is not an all-day pass or a bus-transfer card.
- If you bought the wrong fare section or the gate will not open, use the assistance point before trying again. Show the departure station and destination so staff can resolve the actual journey.
Children should not simply be handed an adult card with the expectation that the reader can recognize their age. Ask the seller to confirm the applicable child or youth setup. Families with children under six should check the operator’s accompanied-infant conditions, especially where one guardian is travelling with several young children.
Prepare for card-based buses, even when a cash fare is displayed
Daejeon’s bus association fare page says city buses, including BRT, operate on a transport-card basis. Its alternative fare column is labelled cash by bank transfer; that is not a promise that a driver will accept a handful of coins. For a visitor, the practical solution is to have a charged compatible card before reaching the stop.
The regular city-bus card fare is KRW 1,500 for adults, KRW 750 for youths and KRW 350 for children. These are not the Metro’s fares. Community buses and journeys beyond the city boundary have their own pricing, so a familiar-looking bus should not automatically be put into the same budget category.
At a stop, check both the route number and the direction. The stop across the road may have a similar name but serve the opposite journey. Save the Korean destination name and the stop you intend to leave at; watch the onboard information as you approach. Tap with the same card on boarding and alighting. On distance-section routes, missing the exit tap can also trigger an additional charge on a later ride, not merely lose a discount.
Allow time to get from the Metro exit to the correct bus stop. A route planner’s transfer icon does not mean the vehicles share a platform. If a road crossing, elevator detour or construction barrier makes the connection awkward, compare the next bus or a short taxi ride instead of rushing.
The transfer window depends on the next service
The bus association’s transfer rules allow up to three qualifying transfers and require both boarding and alighting taps. Each person’s benefit needs their own card. Reboarding the same bus route generally does not qualify, apart from designated operational exceptions; do not plan an ordinary shopping return as a free transfer.
For buses, the applicable window depends on the next route’s weekday service interval: routes at 15 minutes or less use a 30-minute window, while those at 16 minutes or more can use 60 minutes. Check the current route list instead of guessing from how long you personally waited. For a connection into the Metro, use the operator’s 30-minute rule; it also limits the Metro part of the transfer chain to one.
A transfer benefit is not always a zero charge. The Metro transfer table gives the following adult examples for qualifying local trips.
| Journey | Initial fare | Additional fare | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular city bus → Metro Section 1 | 1,500 | 50 | 1,550 |
| Metro Section 1 → regular city bus | 1,550 | 0 | 1,550 |
| Regular city bus → Metro Section 2 | 1,500 | 50 plus 100 | 1,650 |
These examples are not a formula for every age group or regional service. Use the appropriate fare table for a child, youth, community bus or cross-boundary journey. A break for lunch can also turn two rides into separate paid trips. Budget for that possibility rather than treating every journey in an afternoon as one continuous transfer chain.
Resolve station names before the return trip
Daejeon Station, Seodaejeon railway station and Seodaejeonnegeori Metro station are not interchangeable names. If an onward reservation says Seodaejeon, getting off at a similarly named Metro station is not the same as reaching the correct intercity boarding platform. Check the railway address and the street connection while you still have time to adjust.
For a day focused on the old centre, walking between nearby addresses can remove unnecessary gate entries. For a journey from the old centre to Government Complex or Yuseong Spa, Line 1 is a useful starting point. For destinations away from the railway, compare the full bus route with Metro plus a final connection, not just the minutes spent inside a train.
The Daejeon two-day itinerary helps decide which areas belong together. Keep transport planning separate from admission times: a direct train does not ensure that a museum is open or that the shop you want is the branch nearest the station.
Use the assistance service before an awkward journey
The operator offers an assisted Metro journey service for passengers who have difficulty moving around, including wheelchair users and people with visual impairments. Requests are made by telephone to the departure station. The page lists each station’s number and describes coordination between departure and arrival staff.
Ask about arrangements in advance, including the meeting point and how much notice is needed. The published service is station assistance, not a promise of an accessible taxi, a porter for every bag or an English-speaking escort. For independent travel, check the street elevator, paid-area route and arrival exit, and ask staff about equipment disruptions.
Large bags change a journey even on a one-line system. Leave space by doors, keep a suitcase under control while boarding and choose an elevator rather than balancing a heavy case on moving stairs. Before leaving stored luggage, confirm the collection arrangement. Your return route starts from where the bags are, not necessarily the last attraction.
Check the train’s destination as well as its departure time
Use the station timetable for the right direction and travel day, then compare it with the platform display. The last train from a platform is not automatically the last train that completes your intended trip. Read the destination display rather than boarding solely because it is on the correct side.
If a bus follows the Metro, check that final leg separately. Save the accommodation’s Korean address and keep enough phone battery for a taxi fallback. For an onward reserved train, allow for leaving the Metro, collecting luggage if necessary and finding the intercity platform. Avoid using a guessed citywide closing time as the basis for a tight connection.
Use the Korean navigation-app guide to identify the actual onward stop. If you need data while checking that connection, compare the options in the Korea eSIM and SIM guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Daejeon Metro a flat-fare system?
No. The fare changes between journeys of up to 10 kilometres and those exceeding 10 kilometres from the departure station.
Can I use the same Tmoney card I used in Seoul?
A compatible Tmoney card is accepted, and the operator lists Tmoney-family station recharge service. Check the remaining balance before travelling.
Can I buy a token and use it to transfer to a bus?
No. The token is for a Metro journey. Local transfer benefits require a compatible transport card and the required taps.
Why did the Metro charge another KRW 50 after a bus?
For an adult transferring from a regular city bus to Metro Section 1, the fare table specifies that fare difference. It is not necessarily an error.
Does every bus transfer allow an hour?
No. The next route’s published weekday interval determines whether the bus window is 30 or 60 minutes. Do not extend the Metro connection beyond its stated 30-minute window.
Can I ride the tram shown on a Line 2 map?
Not under the current operating arrangement covered here. Line 2 remains a construction project; use an operating-service map and current notices.
Is Seodaejeonnegeori the intercity station called Seodaejeon?
No. One is a Metro station and the other is a separate railway station. Check the street connection to the actual departure address.
What should I do if I need help reaching the platform?
Contact the departure station using the operator’s assistance-service page, explain your mobility requirements and confirm the meeting arrangement rather than assuming help is automatically reserved.
