5 Days in Seoul 2026: Palaces, Hongdae, Seongsu and Rainy-Day Plans

Contents

Plan around three full sightseeing days

A practical five-day, four-night Seoul plan treats the first and last days as airport and neighborhood time. Divide the three full days into palace-and-old-town Seoul, western neighborhoods, and an eastern or Gangnam day. Five calendar days are rarely five full sightseeing days. If your flights give you extra time, add something nearby rather than filling every day and then cutting back.

This plan assumes you reach the city on the first afternoon and need to leave for the airport on day five, with all four nights in one hotel. Give each day one main objective and make the rest optional. A palace, a theme park, an observation deck and shopping all consume time differently; seeing an area properly means limiting how many other areas you add.

If you plan to replace day four with Lotte World, compare tickets for your date, ages, entry window and inclusions. Check Magic Pass, special events, indoor/outdoor operations and refund rules separately. This is not an admission ticket for Seongsu or Seoul Forest.

Choose the base and departure pattern first

Myeongdong or nearby Euljiro offers a central base for old-town sightseeing and shopping. Hongdae ties the western neighborhoods to an airport-rail journey. Either works: place the arrival and departure activities on the same side as your hotel. There is little value in staying in Hongdae but crossing to Myeongdong for a meeting point before traveling west again.

Count exits, transfers and the walk to the hotel, not just subway stops. With suitcases, look for an elevator route; on sightseeing days, save the journey home. Choose a transport product or attraction pass from the rides and admissions you will genuinely use. A five-day holiday does not automatically justify a five-day product, and adding sights solely to recover a pass price can spoil a sensible route.

Day 1: settle in and explore locally

After reaching the city, store your bags or check in and have a proper meal. Stay around Myeongdong if that is your base, or explore Hongdae and its neighboring streets if you are staying west. Use the first day to identify the station exit, prepare transport payment and buy essentials. Avoid a timed attraction that would be lost if the flight is delayed.

If you arrive early and feel energetic, add a walk in the same district. A late arrival needs only dinner and rest. Airport Railroad All-Stop and Express trains are different services: a traveler heading to Hongdae should not treat the nonstop train to Seoul Station as an equivalent stopping service. Compare the journey to the hotel’s exact address rather than choosing transport because it is popular.

Day 2: Gyeongbokgung, Insadong and the old town

Visit Gyeongbokgung while fresh, eat nearby, then spend the afternoon around Insadong. The focus is palace architecture and traditional streets. If hanbok photography or a detailed palace visit matters to you, do not add a second full palace. Have dinner around Jongno or near the hotel, with only a short Cheonggyecheon walk if energy allows.

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center lists Tuesday closures for Gyeongbokgung and Monday closures for Changdeokgung. When a regular closure overlaps a public or substitute holiday, it can move to the first following non-public-holiday. Write the weekdays onto your itinerary before fixing the palace day. Gyeongbokgung hours change by month, and admission ends before closing; November differs from September and October. Check the month of your visit rather than relying on a single set of autumn hours.

    Day 3: Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong

Keep this day in western Seoul, centered on Hongdae and Yeonnam-dong. A later start gives tired feet a break after the palace day. Arrange cafés, shops and lunch around their actual opening times. This is a flexible neighborhood day, not a checklist requiring every street or fashionable stop.

If you want riverside time, choose one Hangang park with a clear journey home. The riverbank is not simply an extension of the Hongdae shopping streets; allow for transport. In rain, strong cold wind or simple fatigue, remove it and stay with nearby indoor stops and dinner. For an evening in Hongdae, plan a reliable return and do not treat an unconfirmed performance or market as a scheduled event.

Day 4: Seongsu and Seoul Forest, or replace it with Jamsil

The main version stays around Seongsu and Seoul Forest. Let the weather decide whether the park or neighborhood comes first, then keep lunch, cafés and shopping on this side of the city. Seoul Forest facility information gives separate hours and closure days for facilities. Access to the outdoor park does not mean every garden building or greenhouse is open.

If Lotte World is a priority, replace this entire day with Jamsil rather than adding the theme park after Seongsu. A lighter alternative is Jamsil’s shopping complex and Seoul Sky, checking visibility and cancellation terms before booking the observation deck. Seongsu, COEX and Jamsil often appear in eastern or Gangnam itineraries, but that does not make all three a relaxed single day.

If you plan to replace day four with Lotte World, compare tickets for your date, ages, entry window and inclusions. Check Magic Pass, special events, indoor/outdoor operations and refund rules separately. This is not an admission ticket for Seongsu or Seoul Forest.

Day 5: keep activities easy to end

Pack and confirm the terminal, flight and airline check-in requirements before deciding how much time remains for breakfast or shopping near the hotel. Collecting stored luggage is part of the route. Do not place the last stop beyond the hotel in a way that creates another cross-city journey to retrieve bags. Even with an evening flight, retain transport contingency rather than relying on a final admission slot.

For a domestic connection to Jeju or Busan, verify the departure airport; arriving internationally at Incheon does not mean the next flight departs there. Check baggage capacity and airline requirements before the final shopping session. Packing the previous evening is easier than discovering on departure morning that you need another suitcase. A comfortable airport departure is the day’s main goal.

A rainy day still needs one geographical focus

With light rain, retain nearby restaurants and shops and shorten parks and long walks. In persistent rain, replace the outdoor day with one major indoor destination. The National Museum of Korea is a cultural alternative; the COEX area offers another indoor-focused option in Gangnam. They are not neighbors, so choose a main anchor rather than stitching every indoor idea together.

The National Museum of Korea has closure and gallery-maintenance dates, and the Children’s Museum uses reservations. Free general exhibitions do not mean every gallery or session is available at any time. Check special-exhibition and reservation requirements separately. If the group has mixed interests, choose a limited section and leave time for meals and a break.

Give tickets, meals and shopping different priorities

Book genuinely date- or time-limited activities first, fit palaces and museums around operating days, and place flexible meals and shopping afterward. A restaurant with a long queue is a substantial activity, not an automatic short lunch between two timed bookings. A first visit does not require abandoning geographical logic to chase every famous brand.

Separate the budget into fixed transport, accommodation, chosen paid attractions, and flexible food and shopping. You do not need every observation deck, theme park and pass. Start with your interests. If a paid activity is removed, use an existing walk in the same area rather than immediately finding a farther paid attraction to fill the gap.

Adapt the pace to the travelers

With young children, keep one neighborhood as the day’s focus and allow a hotel rest. Staying close to the main activities can help more than making every stop a children’s attraction. With older relatives, spread out the outdoor walking at palaces and parks; a riverside night view is optional. In rain or snow, reduce steps and slippery surfaces and favor shorter journeys.

Returning visitors can replace a familiar palace with an exhibition or neighborhood they care about without automatically traveling farther out. If you want Nami Island or another out-of-city day trip, substitute a whole day rather than turning the holiday into daily early departures. A spare half-day is useful for revisiting the place you enjoyed most.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I see all of Seoul in five days?

No. Protect three full sightseeing days and add nearby activities only when flight times allow.

What if the palace day falls on Tuesday?

Swap it with another full day and check holiday-related closure changes.

    Can Changdeokgung always replace Gyeongbokgung?

Check the date and access requirements. Its regular closure is Monday, and areas such as the Secret Garden have separate arrangements.

Should I change hotels during the trip?

Usually not. Four nights in one hotel simplify luggage and weather adjustments.

Does Hongdae or Myeongdong work better?

Either works. Compare airport access, the exact hotel location and your preferred evening neighborhood.

Where should I add Lotte World?

Replace the whole fourth day, rather than adding it as an evening extra after Seongsu.

Is the National Museum always open on rainy days?

No. Check closure and maintenance notices, and reservations for the Children’s Museum.

Can I include an out-of-city day trip?

Yes, by replacing a full city day rather than adding it to the existing list.

For park routes, ticket choices and transport, see the Lotte World Seoul guide; otherwise keep the Seongsu and Seoul Forest day.
