COEX Aquarium fits naturally into a Gangnam shopping day or an indoor plan for wet weather. Give the shark tank, underwater tunnel, jellyfish lighting and seahorses more time than the photo props. Budget roughly two hours inside, with lunch and Starfield Library separately. Families will have an easier visit if children eat before entry. This route uses the current SEA LIFE COEX name and exhibition zones.

Choose the right aquarium and neighbourhood
The aquarium is in the basement of Starfield COEX Mall at 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam. It is separate from Lotte World Aquarium in Jamsil and SEA LIFE in Busan. Check both city and venue when buying. COEX works particularly well with Starfield Library, Bongeunsa and Samseong; travellers spending a full day at Lotte World should weigh the extra cross-city journey before adding a second aquarium. Keeping one day within a compact area leaves more energy for the exhibits.
Bongeunsa or Samseong station?
Line 9 passengers can use Bongeunsa Exit 7 and ASEM Plaza. From Line 2, follow Samseong Exits 5–6 towards Millennium Square, then the aquarium signs. Choose the line with fewer transfers from your accommodation rather than adding train changes to shorten a mall walk. Entering from Bongeunsa and continuing towards Starfield Library and Samseong makes a useful one-way plan. With a stroller, follow lift signs rather than assuming the numbered exit is step-free; meet companions at the aquarium ticket desk, not an unspecified COEX entrance.
Amazonia and the smaller exhibits
Amazonia World provides a rainforest-themed contrast with the marine galleries. Pick a few differently shaped fish and watch where they hold position instead of photographing every tank. At the Secret Garden of Seahorses, pause and search among the plants before studying how the animals anchor themselves. A simple game of spotting different shapes and colours works well with children and makes the smaller displays rewarding for adults too.
Sharks and the underwater tunnel
Ocean Kingdom is the main shark-viewing stop. Start with the whole tank, then follow one animal as it turns and approaches the glass. Deep Blue Sea Tunnel changes the perspective from side-on to underneath, making the outlines of passing rays and sharks easier to appreciate. Keep the passage open when taking group photos. With only ninety minutes available, allocate more of it to these two areas and one favourite smaller display instead of giving every tank equal time.
Jellyfish, seals and penguins
Sea at Night combines jellyfish with lighting and projected imagery. Reduce screen reflections and wait for a settled composition when photographing it. Seal Beach Cove and Penguins Playground provide a livelier change of pace, although animals may be resting. These recommendations are priorities, not a promise that visitors can reverse the marked route freely. If children tire, take a seated break before deciding how much of the remaining route to cover.
Opening hours and timed activities
Regular opening hours are 10:00–20:00, with entry ending at 19:00. Arrive earlier if you want an unhurried family visit. Check the official activity information and entrance notices for mermaid performances and feeding talks. Use a preferred show as an anchor for nearby galleries rather than relying on old blog timetables. Check separately whether glass-bottom boat or other extras are included in your ticket.
Compare the package, not just the price
Compare the same date, party size and inclusions across the official seller and Klook. Check eligibility, child pricing, photo packages and cancellation rules rather than the lowest headline amount. Reseller conditions can differ from counter-ticket rules. The operator requires proof of birth date for its under-36-month free-entry policy. Have mobile vouchers accessible before reaching the entrance and organise each companion’s ticket together.
Practical family and photography rules
Re-entry is not available, so eat before or after the aquarium. Outside food and animal feed are prohibited, and flash should be disabled. Strollers are allowed, but rentals are handled by COEX Mall rather than inside the aquarium. For older relatives or young children, a shorter visit centred on seahorses, sharks and jellyfish with seated pauses may work better than lingering everywhere. Choose quiet photo positions without tapping the glass or chasing animals along the tank.
Two workable half-day routes
For rain, eat in the mall, spend around two hours in the aquarium, then continue to Starfield Library and shops before leaving via Samseong. In good weather, start around Bongeunsa and move indoors later; respect the temple’s quiet atmosphere and posted photography guidance. Neither plan needs a distant theme park or second aquarium. On arrival day, resolve Incheon Airport to Gangnam transport and luggage storage first, keeping only one paid attraction in the afternoon.
Wheelchair entrance and lifts
For step-free entry, look for the lift beside the ticket counter. Wheelchairs and strollers can be used inside, with lifts between levels. Wheelchair borrowing is first-come, first-served and requires identification; confirm arrangements beforehand if a chair is essential. Follow the mall’s lift and accessibility signs all the way to the ticket desk rather than relying only on a metro exit number. One companion can ask staff while the group waits in a wider area.
Nursing room, toilets and the exit shop
Indoor toilets are after Sea at Night, while Garden of Korean has a nursing and changing room. Ask staff to mark these on the guide map at entry. Deep Blue Square has snack and drink vending machines for a short pause; a proper meal fits better in the mall. Gifts and digital-photo merchandise are sold near the exit, so leave shopping until the end rather than carrying bags through the tunnel.
North parking and validation
Drivers can target COEX Mall’s north entrance; B2 Blue Zone sections 18–20 are nearby parking. The published aquarium rate is KRW 4,800 for four hours after entering the final four licence-plate digits at the validation machine inside. Confirm validation before leaving and include library, exhibition or dinner time in the total parking stay. This is not all-day free parking. Taxis can also use the north entrance, followed by an indoor walk to the basement aquarium.
