Choose a beach walk or a swimming day

Haeundae is a useful first coastal landmark in Busan. Gunam-ro leads from the metro to the centre of the beach; Dongbaekseom lies west and Mipo with the coastal railway lies east. Use that axis to organise food, the aquarium and rail attractions. Allow an estimated 60–90 minutes for a simple walk, or half a day with an extension.

Walking and swimming require different plans. Swimming depends on the managed season, designated water and safety supervision. In October 2026, people walking on the sand do not imply that summer bathing services remain available.

The 2026 bathing season and rental dates differ

The 2026 managed beach season ran from June 26–September 15, with hours of 09:00–18:00. These are this year’s bathing arrangements, not permanent annual dates or a claim that coastal walking is restricted to summer. Outside the managed season, plan shore-based sightseeing.

During the 2026 summer rental period, a parasol with mat, tube or beach bed cost 10,000 won each per use, and a life jacket at 5,000 won. Haeundae equipment rental ran only from July 1 to August 31. Do not assume those services operated throughout the longer bathing season or are available in October.

Check the district beach guide and on-site notices. General beach admission is free; parking, showers, storage and food are separate. A simple sightseeing visit does not require renting beach equipment.

    Metro access via Haeundae Station

Busan Metro Line 2 Haeundae Station is the clearest starting point. Use exits 3 or 5. Follow Gunam-ro towards the sea, cross Haeundaehaebyeon-ro at the signals and reach the central beach. Allow roughly 5–15 minutes depending on the route; allow longer with luggage or children.

From Busan Station, take Line 1 to Seomyeon and transfer to Line 2. Add transfer and walking time before any booked activity. Accommodation near Mipo or Dongbaekseom still requires extra movement along the coast; the district is much larger than the central beachfront.

Leave large luggage at your accommodation rather than dragging it across sand. Check station lift access if required instead of choosing the nearest staircase. Use the full destination name when returning, distinguishing the metro station from similarly named railway stations.

Start with the central beach and Gunam-ro

From the central promenade, look along the curving beach before choosing a direction. This is a practical meeting area near food, the market and aquarium, but also a busy entrance. Move away from crossings and through-routes before stopping as a group.

For a broad photograph, step back to include sand, sea and sky in layers. For portraits, choose somewhere clear of passing walkers before heading onto the sand. Tides, maintenance and crowds mean an old empty-beach photograph may not match your visit.

Gunam-ro and Haeundae Traditional Market offer food breaks. Eat a proper meal before returning to the coast or share a small snack. Check aquarium food rules before buying takeaway to carry inside.

    West towards Dongbaekseom

Near the Westin Josun, the landscape changes from open sand to trees, rocks and coastal paths. Dongbaekseom is connected to the mainland, so no boat is required. Some routes include gradients and steps rather than the flat conditions of the central promenade.

Possible sights include the mermaid statue, rocky coastline and Nurimaru APEC House, associated with the 2005 summit. Check the house’s interior access separately; walking nearby does not guarantee access to every room.

A short return walk near the entrance is a valid alternative to completing the circuit. Agree a recognisable meeting point if splitting by walking ability. Do not use coastal rocks as shortcuts or improvised viewing platforms.

East towards Mipo and the coastal railway

Walking east leads towards Mipo and the Blue Line Park departure area. A capsule reservation requires separate time to reach the correct entrance and check in; the platform is not at the metro exit or immediately beside your first view of the beach.

Sky Capsule links Mipo and Cheongsapo, while the Beach Train continues towards Songjeong. They have different vehicles, routes and tickets. Confirm the departure station and direction rather than arriving at Cheongsapo with a Mipo-origin booking.

Combining the beach, capsule, Cheongsapo cafés and Songjeong becomes a substantial half-day or full-day coastal itinerary. With limited time, choose a Mipo walk and café or make the railway your main activity and shorten the beach stop.

    Respect water and weather restrictions

Haeundae has rip-current risk. Sunshine alone does not establish safe bathing conditions. Follow designated zones, flags and lifeguards; stay out when entry is prohibited. Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts are useful background, not a substitute for local control or permission to swim.

Fog, wind, waves and thunderstorms can alter plans. Walkers should also respect closed paths and avoid wet edges exposed to waves. If swimming is restricted, an indoor visit or meal may be a better use of time. With children, agree a meeting point and who is supervising them.

Plan shade, water and rest in summer, and a wind-resistant layer for cooler seasons. Remove rubbish and follow posted smoking and activity rules; secure light belongings so they cannot blow into the sea.

A wet-weather alternative and where to stay

SEA LIFE Busan near the central beachfront can anchor an indoor family visit. Plan its ticket, admission deadline and visit time independently rather than arriving near closing after a washed-out outdoor day. In uncertain weather, visit indoors first and walk briefly if conditions improve.

Central accommodation favours metro access, food and the main beach; the west suits Dongbaekseom walks and the east suits Mipo. Check the booked room’s actual view, floor and orientation rather than assuming every Haeundae hotel room faces the sea. An overnight stay separates morning, daytime and evening experiences.
