Getting from Seoul to Jinju is not just a choice between a train and a coach. Your arrival point changes the last part of the journey: Jinju railway station, Jinju Express Bus Terminal and Jinju Intercity Bus Terminal are different places. For Jinjuseong Fortress and the old centre, that distinction can matter more than a small difference in the advertised intercity fare.
This guide compares the departure points, explains the current published rail fares and shows how to plan the connection into Jinju without assuming that a railway station, a former station and a bus terminal are interchangeable. Select your actual travel date before comparing services and buying tickets.
Choose the arrival point before choosing the ticket
Start with your accommodation or first stop, not the cheapest search result. Save its Korean name and check which Jinju arrival point gives you the most manageable onward journey. A coach arriving nearer your hotel can be the simpler option with luggage, while a reserved train can suit someone who wants to avoid an uncertain motorway journey.
| Option to compare | Departure to check | Arrival and practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Direct mainline train | Seoul, Gwangmyeong or Suseo, according to the service | Jinju railway station, 진주역; arrange a separate city connection |
| Express coach | Seoul Express Bus Terminal, not automatically neighbouring Central City | Jinju Express Bus Terminal, 진주고속버스터미널 |
| Intercity coach | Seoul Nambu Bus Terminal | Check that the ticket specifies Jinju Intercity Bus Terminal, 진주시외버스터미널 |
The Korea Tourism Organization’s coach guide lists Jinju from both Seoul Express and Seoul Nambu. These are separate departure choices, not two names for the same building. Treat any intermediate stop shown in a booking result as its own location rather than assuming it is the city-centre terminal.
Seoul to Jinju by train: compare the actual departure station
Search for 진주, Jinju, as your destination in KORAIL’s booking service. Check the departure station, train number, arrival time and whether the result is direct. A connection with a short transfer is a different proposition from staying in the same seat, especially with a suitcase or a travelling companion who moves slowly.
Seoul Station may be convenient from central accommodation; Suseo deserves a separate search if you are staying in southeastern Seoul. Gwangmyeong is another origin in the published fare table, but the lower rail fare alone is not a reason to travel out there. Add the cost and effort of reaching the station before comparing the totals. The Seoul subway guide helps with the city leg.
Korea’s high-speed booking arrangements changed with the September 2026 KTX/SRT integration. An older article describing permanently separate systems is not a reliable booking checklist. Follow the current operator channel and the instructions attached to the service you select.
Published Jinju train fares and a realistic comparison
These are adult, one-way standard-class tariff examples from KORAIL’s fare workbook effective 1 September 2026. They are not a live seat quote. Routing matters: the workbook has separate Gyeongjeon tables for services via Seo-Daegu.
| Origin to Jinju | Published standard fare | Comparison note |
|---|---|---|
| Seoul | KRW 53,100 | KRW 52,700 in the separate via-Seo-Daegu table |
| Gwangmyeong | KRW 50,900 | KRW 50,500 in the separate via-Seo-Daegu table |
| Suseo | KRW 51,500 | Different Seoul-area origin; check the actual service |
| Jinju ordinary city bus, adult | KRW 1,650 by accepted transit card; KRW 1,700 cash | Local journey, not included in the intercity train ticket |
The bus amount comes from Jinju’s bus fare page. For an illustrative Seoul rail return using the KRW 53,100 tariff and two separately charged card bus rides, allow KRW 109,500: 53,100 × 2 + 1,650 × 2. This excludes transport within Seoul, attraction admission, meals and taxis. It is a planning calculation, not a package price.
The rail difference between Seoul and Suseo in these examples is KRW 1,600 one way. A substantial cross-city detour can erase that advantage. Similarly, do not assume the cheaper routing is available at the hour you need. Compare the fare displayed for the selected departure with its usable arrival time.
Express coach or Nambu intercity coach?
Check KOBUS for express-coach options and Tmoney’s intercity booking service for applicable intercity departures. Confirm the terminal names on both ends before payment. The local festival organiser’s transport page also distinguishes Seoul Express–Jinju Express from Seoul Nambu–Jinju Intercity, corroborating that they are different routes.
Do not copy the first or last departure from a festival information page into a year-round plan. The bookable timetable for your date takes priority. Check the coach class, cancellation terms, luggage arrangements and whether an issued ticket or boarding code is required. A failed overseas-card transaction is not a confirmed reservation; use a supported operator or authorised purchase channel rather than assuming every website accepts the same cards.
For a day trip, search the return before committing to the outward journey. A cheap outward fare is not useful if the only suitable return has sold out. Avoid planning a coach arrival immediately before a separately booked train elsewhere: road conditions and the transfer between terminals introduce two independent uncertainties.
Keep the booking reference and the issuing service’s retrieval instructions accessible offline. A screenshot is useful for checking the terminal, date and seat, but should not be assumed to replace whatever ticket format the operator requires for boarding.
From Jinju arrival points to Jinjuseong Fortress
The Jinju National Museum’s directions place the museum inside Jinjuseong. They describe the intercity terminal as approximately ten minutes’ walk towards the fortress, while directing railway-station and express-terminal passengers to city-bus connections towards the E-Mart stop in the Jinyangho direction. This is a useful distinction, not a guarantee of your personal walking time.
For the railway-station bus search, use 진주역 as the starting point and 이마트 as the destination suggested by the museum, then inspect the actual direction and stop sequence. From the express terminal, search 진주고속버스터미널. Use the Jinju bus route search and the stop information at the boarding point. A route number without its direction is not enough.
Use the Naver Map and Kakao Map guide to check the boarding position and save the actual fortress or hotel entrance as the destination, rather than the general city name.
No single bus number is promised here as an always-valid station-to-fortress service. Route branches, diversions and the roadside boarding position need travel-day confirmation. Save a screenshot of the Korean destination and check the destination display before boarding. If the live bus system does not load, ask at the station or terminal rather than guessing from an old timetable image.
A taxi is a sensible fallback if a bus connection does not fit your train or you cannot comfortably manage the walk. Show the exact fortress entrance or hotel, not just “Jinju.” Ask for the current fare estimate through the service you use; do not rely on a fixed station-to-centre taxi price from an old itinerary.
Bus payment and transfers inside Jinju
The city lists Tmoney and Cashbee among accepted prepaid cards. Its list of Korean postpaid-card issuers does not establish that an overseas contactless credit card will work on the bus. Have an accepted transit card with enough stored value, or suitable cash, before relying on the connection.
Under Jinju’s published transfer rules, one free transfer is available within 30 minutes after the alighting tap. Tap on and off, use one card per person and change to a different route. If one card pays for several passengers, only one receives the transfer benefit. Cash journeys do not qualify.
Do not interpret that allowance as free transport after visiting the fortress or having lunch. Build your budget around separately paid rides unless your actual connection meets the conditions. A dedicated card per traveller is also clearer when a group splits up or someone takes an earlier bus back.
Avoid the former-station and relocation trap
Jinju railway searches can surface information about a former station area and redevelopment. Do not substitute a cultural-site pin for the operating station named on your ticket. When taking a taxi back, show the train ticket and say 진주역, then confirm that the destination is the operating railway station.
The museum is another reason to read dates carefully. Its 2026 work plan describes a new museum project at the former station area with opening planned for 2028. That is not evidence that the museum has already moved there. For a current visit, use the museum’s current directions rather than an older announcement’s predicted opening date.
The same principle applies to terminal redevelopment news. A proposed integrated terminal is not your boarding point merely because an article once gave a target completion year. The address and departure terminal on an issued ticket, checked against the current operator, are the relevant instructions.
Make the return journey work before adding more stops
Keep the fortress, museum and a meal as the core of a first visit, then add extra destinations only if your return margin remains comfortable. Work backwards from the booked departure: allow for the city ride, waiting, finding the platform or coach bay, and a contingency if the first connection fails. There is no universal safe connection time for every hotel and arrival point.
If you are visiting during a major event, check Jinju’s bus notices for dated diversions. A festival shuttle is not a permanent city route, and a previous month’s temporary notice is not today’s timetable. If your wider trip continues through Busan, use the separate Seoul–Busan rail guide for that journey rather than assuming a Jinju ticket covers it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jinju the same destination as Jeonju?
No. Select 진주, Jinju, for this journey. 전주, Jeonju, is a different city. Check the Korean station name before paying, especially when comparing similarly spelled search results.
Can I walk straight from Jinju railway station to the fortress?
Do not plan it as the short terminal-to-fortress walk. The museum’s directions distinguish the railway arrival from the intercity terminal; arrange a city bus or taxi for the railway-station connection.
Which Seoul coach terminal should I use?
Compare Seoul Express for the Jinju express-terminal route and Seoul Nambu for the intercity-terminal route. Follow your exact ticket. Central City and Seoul Express share a subway-station area but are not interchangeable departures.
Is Suseo always cheaper overall?
No. Its published example rail fare is lower than the Seoul example, but the journey to Suseo, service availability and timing can outweigh the difference. Compare door-to-door plans.
Can two people share one transit card?
The transfer rules give only one passenger a free transfer when one card pays for several people. Separate cards are the clearer choice if both travellers need a connecting city bus.
Does a return bus ride count as a free transfer?
Not simply because you are returning. The published benefit requires a qualifying different-route transfer within 30 minutes after tapping off. The same route is excluded.
Has Jinju National Museum already moved to the old station?
Current visitor directions still point to the fortress site. The new-site opening is a future project in the museum’s 2026 plan. Recheck the museum’s own visitor page before travelling.
Should I book a same-day return before arriving in Jinju?
It is sensible to secure a workable return, especially for a fixed itinerary. Check change and refund conditions, then leave enough local-transfer margin rather than relying on the last possible bus to the station.
